Orient Expressions as a project began taking form in 2003 with DJ Yakuza and Richard Hamer teaming up to produce Istanbul 1:26 A.M., a track that would somehow define the sound of the group. Helped by Murat Uncuoglu for its final aural sheen “ Istanbul 1:26 am” quickly became a staple in many compilations. Buoyed by that response Yakuza and R.H. sought out their friends to participate in more varied sound works. Thus Cem Yildiz came on board just in time for the fourtet to come up with Divan, their first album which combined Cem’s baglama playing with Murat and Yakuza’s electronica as well as Richards wood winds. By their second album, Kuliyat 2006, a collaboration with folk singer Sabahat Akkiraz, the group had also settled into formation with Adile Yadirgi on leading vocals, and Levent Guzel on percussion.

Performing in Turkey, Spain, Germany, Holland, England and Norway, Orient Expressions has been well received in various festival formats across the continent. Over time its sound has matured towards a trippy electronic blend of East and West. Currently absorbed in its third album and eagerly anticipating the release of “ Istanbul 1:26am Remixes”, the group is gearing up for a musical exploration of its interpretation of the city to which it owes its birth: Istanbul.
