Trans-Global Underground’s last 2 albums, ‘Impossible Broadcasting’ and the more recent, award winning ‘Moonshout’ were notable for the London based collectives fluid line-up and numerous collaborations across Europe, Asia and Africa. ‘The Stone Turntable’ finds them back in London…somewhere in the Wapping area to be exact, where most of it was recorded…and the main feature of the album is the live band that has come to be recognised as one of the UKs best live acts.
However this isn’t a live album, but the music started as a series of rough ideas and experiments that were then crafted into set that starts where ‘Moonshout’ left off, with a mixture of more raw, funky grooves such as the ’70s clavinet driven’Don’t Let Me Skip a Beat’ “Tribe Organiser’ and ‘The Stone Turntable’ mixed with more melodic songs such as ‘Deolali Junglee,’ an affectionate Bollywood tribute, and the powerful ‘Sing for the Love of Your Life.’
Sheema Mukherjee’s sitar is once again takes the instrumental starring role, but there’s more of an emphasis on Mantu’s drums and Tuups congas, plus a greater use of brass and reeds than on any previous TGU outing.
And of course there are a few special guests…ex ADF bassist Dr Das adding his unmistakeable groove on several tracks, UK rappers Shimmerbaby and Dizraeli, Afro jazz artist Keith Haynes and long time Natacha Atlas and Banco de Gaia associate Larry Whelan on horns.
This summer Trans-Global Underground will celebrate 20 years of their existence. ‘The Stone Turntable’ starts the party off in style.
The Stone Turntable is available on iTunes now.
